UCO Scheme
Vegetable oil previously used for cooking food in retail food establishments and food-manufacturing industries was routinely recovered and used in animal feed. However, this catering material was banned from inclusion in animal feed from November 2004.
The scheme (developed by the industry and PAI) now only applies to the recover of vegetable oil from food factory processes where the material has only been used in the factory and is not from any catering facilities on site.
The vegetable oil from catering establishments is now being used for technical purposes such as Biodiesel, incineration etc.
PAI has been involved in various discussions with the UK Cabinet Office and other stakeholders, to facilitate a scheme for the safe disposal of catering vegetable oils.
