UFAS, the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme, is one of AIC's longest established certification schemes. UFAS aims to protect human and animal health by ensuring safe practices in manufacture and distribution of animal feedingstuffs based on HACCP principles. It verifies that the industry is meeting its obligations under the appropriate feed safety related legislation and codes of practice in maintaining safety in the feed and food chain.

Certification against UFAS Standards provides a mechanism for giving assurances to retailers and consumers about the product standards of feed and feed materials and thereby assurances regarding the safety, wholesomeness and integrity of the product. The scheme has been designed to provide assurances that animal feeds are processed/ handled in accordance with the specified Standards, which go beyond relevant legislation and demand best commercial practice.

This Code of Practice applies to all feedingstuffs manufactured, including equine feedingstuffs, complementary feedingstuffs and premixtures. It applies to conventional feedingstuffs and to those feedingstuffs known as “blends”, and also applies to feedingstuffs which may be intended for use for the manufacturers own needs as well as those which are marketed.

PAI carries out a large number of UFAS feed mill audits and has gained wide experience working with the animal feed industry. PAI's skilled assessors have considerable knowledge and carry out compound animal feed assessments in the UK including Northern Ireland.
